Start with a shared vocabulary

When every teammate labels source, medium and campaign differently, reporting fragments. Agree on lowercase conventions, separators, campaign ownership and a small set of approved values before launching.

The five useful parameters

Use utm_source for the publishing platform, utm_medium for a broad channel classification, utm_campaign for the planned initiative, utm_content for a creative or placement distinction and utm_term for a meaningful paid-search or audience label when useful.

Build a simple taxonomy

An example might be source=meta, medium=paid_social, campaign=sg_nov_service_launch, content=video_a. Avoid storing names, email addresses or other personal information in campaign URLs.

Test before you spend

Click test links, confirm query strings survive consent and website transitions, then check realtime events and reporting dimensions. Keep redirects and cross-domain measurement documented.

Keep documentation alive

Create a single ownership sheet, a URL builder and a monthly review to retire unused values. Your taxonomy should be easy enough that someone new can apply it correctly.

Try this next

Pick one improvement, document the starting point, agree on a useful signal and review it on a realistic timeline.
